What is a Constitutional Remedy?

In homeopathy, the constitutional remedy is selected to help treat the patient’s entire system - aiming to address both their presenting symptoms, the root cause of their illness, and their susceptibility to future imbalances.

A constitutional remedy refers to a particular remedy that addresses the individual’s overall physical, mental, and emotional state. It will be the remedy that fits the whole picture of the patient’s health, at a given point in time.

Constitutional treatment is a genuinely holistic approach and the cornerstone of homeopathic treatment. It is a unique approach that takes into account the patient as a whole, rather than just addressing isolated symptoms. Through thorough evaluation of the patient’s unique characteristics, constitutional treatment aims to restore balance and harmony within the body – leading to long-term health and resilience against disease.

In homeopathy, the constitutional remedy is selected to help treat the patient’s entire system – aiming to address both their presenting symptoms, the root cause of their illness, and their susceptibility to future imbalances. The constitutional remedy will reflect the patient’s personal and medical history. Understanding the psychological and emotional aspects of a patient’s constitution, as well as their physical make-up, is key to selecting the right remedy.

How is a Constitutional Remedy chosen?

The process of selecting a constitutional remedy involves In-depth Case Taking.

During the Initial Consultation, the homeopath will spend time asking detailed questions about the patient’s physical health, emotional well-being, state of mind, personality traits, lifestyle and family history. After finding out all the particular details relating to the patient’s presenting complaint, additional questions may be asked relating to:

  • Temperament: e.g. anxious, cheerful, introverted, etc.
  • Physical & General characteristics: e.g. body type, skin tone, energy levels, recurring physical symptoms or conditions, past illnesses and/or chronic conditions, sleep patterns, dietary preferences and reactions to weather, temperature or seasons, etc.
  • Emotional traits: e.g. predominant moods, response to stress, interpersonal relationships, irritability, sadness, etc.
  • Mental attributes: e.g. thought patterns, decision making processes, intellectual capability, mental agility, ability to focus, etc.

Once the homeopath has a clear understanding of your constitution, they will match your overall profile to one of the many homeopathic remedies to find the most suitable remedy that incorporates the patient’s constitutional type, and the symptoms of their condition or disease.

A Follow-up Consultation will be required to re-evaluate the effectiveness of the constitutional remedy, and will need to be monitored over time. If necessary, the remedy may be adjusted or changed based on any changes in the patient’s health or symptom picture.

Constitutional remedies address the underlying imbalances in a patient’s constitutional make-up, and bring about deeper healing and lasting changes in health.
